[PODCAST] Robots, Tin Man, and Heart-Led Leadership

An Interview with Mara and Stephen Klemich, Heartstyles

Remember the Tin Man in the classic story Wizard of Oz?  All he wanted was a heart. It’s the perfect metaphor for what might be wrong with business today.  As robots threaten to take human jobs, companies struggle with hiring and retaining top talent, maybe it’s the missing heart that differentiates a future filled with success…or failure. For this episode of Geeks, Geezers, and Googlization, we pulled back the curtain on living and leading with heart.

As hosts of the Geeks Geezers and Googlization, we (Ira Wolfe and Keith Campagna) thrive on bringing to you some of the most interesting people in the world of HR. We enter each episode with a simple goal: to answer the question “what don’t our listeners know about the future of work but should?” Within that mindset, we often don’t know what to expect and we are mastering the subtle art of “going with the flow.”  It’s challenging for sure but hopefully ensures that we keep you our listeners engaged, our guests comfortable, and the podcast informational, entertaining, and fun.

We once again succeeded this week with two amazing people, Mara and Stephen Klemich, co-founders of Heartstyle. They are disrupting the way business leaders must think about growing the business by encouraging each and every employee to be the best self they can be.  The timing couldn’t have been better.

The timing couldn’t be better. With just two days before the heart-led and love-driven Valentine’s Day, our podcast took a most surprising turn:  how “love” is one of four universal principles that can drive employee engagement, transform leadership, and return higher profits. We can now say that we’ve covered an incredibly diverse series of topics: from robots and technology to Millennials and candidate experience…to Love!

Our guests, Mara and Stephen, are on a personal mission, to help people become the best versions of themselves. They have been helping organizations on a global scale embrace change management, increase their level of adaptability, and their profitability as well. They do it by focusing on 4-letter words that most people would agree has no place or value inside a business: LOVE. So what is it our guests and the likes of Elon Musk and John Lennon know about love that the business world seems to ignore?

It should come as no surprise to anyone that today’s world is full of innovation, destruction, success, and failure. This enormous disruption has left its indelible mark on the talent marketplace. Unemployment is at record lows and employee disengagement is stuck at near-record highs. For many organizations, it is near-impossible to find and keep smart, able workers.  At a time when many organizations reach for technology to solve their people’s problems, Mara and Stephen offer a simpler, more affordable, powerful solution: living and leading with heart.

What does love have to do with leadership and managing talent in a world of robots, technology, and change?

Can heart-lead leadership really be the answer?  The Klemich’s have the research to back it up. They shared with us the success of a client they have had for over a quarter-century! This fast-food retail client has 1.7 million employees and while using Heartstyles as a corporate model, they experienced increased sales and customers experience ratings at the locations across the globe, wherever Heartstyle was implemented:

  • 5.5% increase in the commitment to the brand led to more engaged members, which leads to a 9% increase in guest satisfaction.
  • What does a 9% increase in guest experience mean to a global fast-food provider?  Millions of dollars.

This is what sustainable employee engagement is like.  So what does love have to do with leadership in a world of robots, technology, and change?
