Competency Assessment Test for LeadersPre-Hire. Development. Succession Planning
Whether you’re looking to identify high potential leaders, develop up and coming managers, or implement your leadership succession plan, Success Performance Solutions are experts in competency assessment tests for leaders and managers.
Why use a leadership competency test?
Selecting and developing your next leaders, managers, and supervisors is serious business … and expensive in so many ways when make a mistake. Unfortunately many companies continue to select their leaders based on personality traits or behavior style (DISC) alone. But that’s not how leadership unfolds. Effective leadership requires skills and abilities, not just a few personality traits.
A competency assessment test for leaders is often used to check an employee’s or candidate’s ability to lead others or projects prior to hiring or promoting him. Using competencies to select and develop removes the unconscious bias associated with personality tests and allows management to focus their attention on skills and abilities required to lead others.
Because coping with today’s business environment calls for the ability of people to tackle complex tasks at an accelerating pace, people need a range of competencies to face the complex challenges of today’s world. Examples of leadership competencies are managing others, leading others, coaching others, motivating others, and relationship management.
Assessing manager and leader competencies with leadership skills tests is the preferred method to hire, promote, and develop employees because it represents a whole-person approach.

Using an online competency based management test, you can quickly and accurately assess the leadership skills and potential of your existing managers. An online management assessment test can be used to test everything from basic interpersonal skills to advanced leadership abilities. With a competency test designed to assess leadership and management skills, you can identify a manager’s strengths and weaknesses, helping you (and them) make better decisions about which projects they should be in charge of. What is a competency?
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) defines a competency as “a measurable pattern of knowledge, skills, abilities, behaviors, and other characteristics that an individual needs to perform work roles or occupational functions successfully.” Success Performance Solutions’ management assessment tests include testing for leadership skills, competence, and potential, management style, personality traits, motivation, aptitude, and general mental abilities.
Competencies, often called emotional intelligence, are often called “soft skills.” But “soft” leadership skills are anything but soft. McKinsey Quarterly recently featured a series of articles on leadership development. McKinsey stated that “…senior executives overlook the “softer” skills their leaders will need to pass changes throughout the organization and make them stick.” In other words, leaders selected for their strategic and working prowess will fail when they can’t get others to respond. Without a strong, emotionally intelligent leader, personal and professional failure is much more likely to occur than is accomplishment.
